Coutinho Becomes Top Scoring Brazilian in the English Top Flight

Liverpool attacker Philippe Coutinho is now officially the highest scoring Brazilian in England’s top flight. His effort for the Reds in their 2-1 win over Stoke at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday took him to 30 goals in the Premier League.

In doing so, he overtook Juninho Paulista’s total of 29, accrued in three separate spells at Middlesbrough. Coutinho drew the game level for Liverpool as they trailed Stoke and two minutes later, his compatriot Roberto Firmino scored the winner.

Coutinho arrived on Merseyside in January 2013 from Inter Milan and is continuously linked with a move to Barcelona. He had suffered for form after a returning from an ankle injury in January, but with goals against Everton and Stoke in the last week, he has returned to his early season form.

Coutinho was a huge doubt for the Stoke game after a sickness bug forced him off during the midweek draw with Bournemouth. Jurgen Klopp revealed that Coutinho had lost 3 kilos since Wednesday.

“Most people would be happy with this,” Klopp joked, “But for a professional athlete it is not so good.”
