Gabriel Jesus Returns to Training

Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro says it is a dream to play under his “idol” Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu. Casemiro broke into the Madrid side shortly after the Frenchman took over from Rafa Benitez last season.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength in a holding midfield role, sealing his status as a starter for Brazil too. The Brazilian insists that it is easy to take advice from World Cup winner and Ballon D’Or winner Zidane.

“Being coached by Zidane? At the start it was a bit difficult. I grew up watching him play, he's Zidane above all, he's respected as a coach, you have to respect Zidane! Zidane was an idol to me. I grew up watching him play. He always tells me how to play and take the ball out.”

Casemiro was coy about comparisons to French midfielder Claude Makelele, whom Zidane starred alongside at Madrid just over a decade ago, “Am I similar to Makelele? Maybe a little, because I have Kroos and Modric by my side, two players who have almost the same quality as Zidane.”
