‘I’ve Proven Myself for Brazil’ says Alisson

AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson insists that he is worthy of the number 1 shirt for the Seleção, despite having played little club football for Roma this season. Alisson left Internacional for the Serie A club last summer, but has found himself second choice behind Wojciech Szczesny.

Many pundits believe Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves would be a better fit, but Tite has kept faith with Alisson and the Roma man insists he has done enough in his country’s colours to justify that trust.

“I've proven that even without playing [for my club], I can do a good job here with Brazil,” Alisson said. “It's difficult, but we have to play with the hand we are dealt. The expectation on all the players is always very high, and I will always work hard to meet those expectations.

“I feel 100%. Of course, I'm a bit tired after a long trip [from Italy], but nothing beats the joy of representing your country alongside so many players of such high quality.  I trained with [goalkeeping coach] Taffarel [on Tuesday in Sao Paulo], not as intensely as usual, because we were still two days away from the game.

“But I am 100% and I have been training hard in Italy to ensure I am always ready for join up with the Selecao.” Alisson had words of praise for Benfica goalkeeper Edison, who has been called up for the first time for the March qualifiers.

“He’s doing a great job. He’s young and has a lot of potential. He's in great form for his team, Benfica, who are top of the Portuguese league. I think Brazil are very well served with goalkeepers and we have options for many years to come.”
