Chelsea defender David Luiz has been voted into the PFA Team of the Season by his peers. The Brazilian was voted as one of the two best centre halves of the campaign, alongside clubmate and central defensive partner Gary Cahill.
Luiz was a surprise signing from Paris Saint Germain on deadline day in August, having left the London club for PSG back in 2013. With the Blues looking for a centre half, they settled on Luiz on the final day of the summer window in a £30m deal.
He has been a revelation at the heart of a back 3, with The Blues currently leading the league table by four points with seven games left. Luiz’s reputation was not always solid during his first spell in England and he has since lost his place in the Brazil squad.
However, he has formed a key part of Chelsea’s defensive unit, earning wide spread plaudits for his assured performances. The PFA Team of 2016-17 reads as follows: De Gea, Walker, Luiz, Cahill, Rose, Hazard, Alli, Kante, Mane, Lukaku, Kane.
Luiz joins Sylvinho (2000-01) and Philippe Coutinho (2014-15) as Brazilians to be voted into the Team of the Year, which is decided by players and coaches.
